Students and a teacher frame a lighthouse poster while smiling.

#ArtsInEducationWeek: Figurative beacons lit the hallways of Community High School (CHS) last week as students created lighthouse posters that celebrated their Eagle pride.

Inspired by BCS Convocation speaker Steve Pemberton’s book, “The Lighthouse Effect,” CHS classes made posters that demonstrated how they can be lighthouses to others by showing “PRIDE” (Positive attitude, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Effort towards graduation). Students placed words and symbols that symbolized struggles in the waves and rocks of the ocean while they filled the lighthouses with other words and symbols that showed how people have guided them. In the lighthouse beams, they described how they can be lighthouses for others. Several classes used mixed media elements for dramatic effect.

“I have to tell you how incredibly impressed I am with the work you put in and the thought you put in,” Principal Cathy Haughney told students over afternoon announcements on Friday. “The creativity really showed that you thought about what it means to have a beacon of light in your life and what it means to overcome obstacles to reach for that light.”

Students had the following to say about their lighthouse projects:

- Chase W.: “The lighthouse reminds me to stay the course and be my best self.” 🌟✨
- Dynasty S.: “It reminds me to look out for others.” 👫💡
- Charlie C.: “To be honest and to take up for yourself.” 💪✅
- Aiden B.: “Makes me think of those I love and inspires me to have a good attitude.” ❤️🌈
