Welch, Laurel

Thank you for being with me!  Our classroom is dedicated to a growing sense of citizenship through analysis of American literature.  We work to push ourselves into fiction and non-fiction at and above our level.  We are not just graduating, we are learning how to learn in order to be able to find answers to our own questions.

I am originally from Oregon, where I graduated with my Bachelors from Portland State University in International Studies, Hispanic and Latin American Studies.  Not long after graduating, I moved to north Florida where I attended the University of North Florida for my Masters of Education.  My main focus was on Secondary Education, Social Studies. I earned my Professional Teaching License in the state of Florida long enough to renew it to 2025.  Doggedly, I earned my certification to teach both English and Social Studies 6-12.  In the meantime, I worked as a long-term substitute for five years in St. Johns County, in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.  I attempted being a Realtor for about fifteen minutes while frustrated at the recession, but it was not a good job for me.  I like the houses but not the sales.

My music drew me to North Carolina, as I play professionally on the side with my all-originals band.  I secured my North Carolina teaching license and applied to perhaps twenty places, but really, I wanted to work at Community High.  I am fortunate that they wanted me too.

I look forward to this year!  I can't imagine what I'll get to learn and teach!
