9. Employ a variety of reading strategies to deeply comprehend grade level text.

  • Evidences a conversation with the text through (with minor prompting):

-asking questions of the text and one’s own thinking;

- Employs pre, during, and post reading strategies

- summarizes text to clarify meaning

-uses “fix-up”strategies to clarify meaning when comprehension breaks down

  • Without prompting, student continuously evidences a conversation with the text.



3. Contribute ideas and evidence in a small group or whole group discussion that builds upon and extends the ideas and evidence of others.

  • “ piggy back” on others’ ideas by summarizing what was said;

  • specifically refers to a place in the text (or visual) for others to follow;

  • Shows respect by making eye contact and listening as others speak without interrupting.

* Introduce the mnemonic device (SOAPS) and Rhetorical Triangle -  Subject, Occasion,    Audience, Purpose, Speaker (Rhetorical Triangle - speaker, audience, subject)

* Provide textual evidence to support ideas and analysis

* Diagnostic “testing” - reading & writing samples; Achieve Level Set Assessment

* Intro to Senior project - and begin writers’ workshop .

8. Analyze the validity of sources when conducting sustained or short term research.

  • identify the source and author and any biases

  • distinguish between primary and secondary sources;

  • analyze multiple sources (websites, listserves, newspaper, magazine, books, etc…) to  identify strengths and limitations of various sources in relation to your thesis statement.



  • Can teach others how to do this.

  • incorporate critique of source(s) in body of proposal; or in notetaking guide





17(a) Prewriting:  Combining important information from multiple sources to build a research paper.


  • choose direct quotes that will be used to support their ideas and claims.


  • paraphrase an author’s words by clearly explaining what the author means while using your own words and a different sentence structure


  • summarizing the main ideas of a source


  • Can teach others to do this.

  • States own assumptions (beliefs) in underlying  research and documents support for and/or any challenges to these assumptions as research progresses

Unit Goals: (10 -12 days)


1. Narrow down a research topic (not too small, not too big)

2. Create a formal business letter from a template and exemplar.

3.  Find appropriate sources using the library, Google (advanced search), and List Serves (NC Wise OWL)

4.  Analyze the validity of a source (good, bad, and ugly).

5.  Paraphrase an author’s words.

6.  Summarize author’s main points.

7.  Quote text that is useful to support his/her claims in their own research.

8.  Craft a strong thesis statement.

9.  Find appropriate sources to use in research.

10.  Organize and make sense of sources to use in the research paper (notetaking)
